In the tapestry of divinity, Shailaputri weaves,

A goddess whose presence eternally perceives,

From Himalayan heights to the depths of the earth,

Her spirit guides us with unending worth.

She is the dawn, the genesis of divine grace,

In her Muladhara abode, we find our place,

Crimson like the Earth, her essence so profound,

Within her, the universe’s secrets are found.

As Yogis seek the awakening of the core,

On Shailaputri’s day, they meditate and explore,

Initiating into Shakti Mantras, they aspire,

To walk the path of wisdom and higher desire.

She symbolizes Earth’s strength and foundation,

The hills, rivers, oceans, her divine narration,

Her coherent and distinct qualities combine,

In Shailputri’s embrace, Earth’s soul does shine.

She’s the spark of life in each human heart,

A reminder that from Earth, we all depart,

Shailputri, the guardian of Mother Earth’s art,

In her sacred essence, we find a fresh start.

With each step, we climb towards the divine,

In Shailputri’s presence, we brightly shine,

A goddess of power, love, and endless grace,

She’s the sacred essence that we forever embrace.

In the world of divinity, a sacred array,

    Nabadurga’s forms in brilliant display,

Shailaputri, the daughter of the mountain’s grace,

    Brahmacharini, with devotion’s serene face.

    Chandraghanta, with crescent moon’s adorn,

Kushmanda, source of life at early morn,

Skandamata, mother of Kartikeya so divine,

Katyayani, fierce and radiant, in battle’s line.

Kalaratri, the dark night’s fearsome might,

Mahagauri, pure and radiant, shining bright,

Siddhidatri, bestower of blessings and grace,

In these nine forms, we find Durga’s embrace.

They are the stages of her divine crusade,

Against Mahishasura, in the cosmic parade,

For nine days, we worship, revere, and pray,

As she slays the demon on Vijayadashami’s day.

These forms of Maa Durga, a source of light,

Guiding us through darkness, dispelling the night,

In Navaratri and Durga Puja, we sing and adore,

    Nabadurga’s blessings, forever we implore.

Her strength and love, an eternal embrace,

In every challenge, she helps us find our place,

Nabadurga, a symbol of courage and grace,

Her devotion in our hearts, we forever embrace.

With each form, a lesson to learn and explore,

    Nabadurga’s blessings, we eternally implore,

Through life’s battles and challenges we face,

She’s our guiding light, our saving grace.

In the devotion of Nabadurga, we find our way,

Her nine forms guiding us every single day,

With faith and love, our hearts soar,

    In Nabadurga’s eternal grace, forevermore.

In a tale from afar, young Piku’s plea did start,

Her mother Durga, with a heavy heart did part,

“What is it, my child, you wish to say to me?”

In gentle tones, Piku replied, “Mother, hear my plea.

I ask of you, dearest mother, lay down your arms,

Let not war’s tumult and battles sound alarms,

Come to me, as a true mother should be,

A mother’s love, pure and free.

“Why, Mother, why wield weapons so dire?

Let’s embrace peace, let our hearts conspire,

I know you love me beyond all measure,

Never to harm me, your greatest treasure.

“Why be known as the fierce warrior queen?

    With a buffalo’s head, a fearsome scene,

During Sandhipuja, blood flows like wine,

    Kali’s dance, a violent sign.

“Mother, is this the way to be revered?

With heads of demons, you’ve persevered,

But never harm me, your child so dear,

Your love for me, crystal clear.

“Yet, Mother, how can you be so mild?

When others see you, fearsome and wild,

A symbol of victory, of good over bad,

Why, Mother, do you make them so sad?”

    Durga pondered her daughter’s plea,

A mother’s love, profound and free,

“Indeed, my child, you speak so true,

I am the symbol of victory, it’s true.

“But fear not, my darling, I shall relent,

To spare you harm, I am content,

I’ll lay down my arms, let peace prevail,

My love for you shall never fail.

“To those who call for war and strife,

I’ll teach a lesson about life,

With just one hand, I’ll vanquish their might,

For love and peace, I’ll stand upright.”

Piku’s words found support in the air,

Saraswati chimed in, saying with care,

“They call me too, but I won’t engage,

In violence, I’ll not become a cage.

“Let me be, like the peaceful dove,

In pursuit of knowledge, not to shove,

Exams and learning, let them thrive,

No need for violence, for that, we’ll strive.”

Even Lakshmi, with her wealth and grace,

Joined the conversation in this sacred place,

“We shall not harm, but love and nurture,

With compassion, we shall find a future.”

As they spoke, Ganesha interjected clear,

“Mother, let’s not live in fear,

War and battle are not for us,

Let others fight, let them discuss.

“I seek to be the lord of heaven high,

Not destruction and chaos, but peace I’ll buy,

My mother, let’s embrace love’s art,

And never let violence tear us apart.”

Durga listened to them, her heart did sway,

In deep thought, she pondered what to say,

“Young Piku, your words have touched my soul,

    I’ll reconsider my warrior’s role.

“I’ll lay down my arms, embrace your plea,

For the love of my child, I shall decree,

That violence is not our path to take,

In love and peace, we shall partake.”

And so, in unity, they found their way,

A family of gods, in love they’d stay,

Young Piku’s dream had come to be,

A world of peace and harmony.

Upon the Representative List, we see,

    Intangible Heritage of Humanity’s embrace,

Durga Puja, a cultural tapestry’s grace.

In Kolkata’s heart, where fervor ignites,

The annual festival, in vibrant nights,

    A ten-day worship, a grand affair,

To honor Ma Durga, beyond compare.

From Ganga’s clay, the artisans mold,

    Images of divinity, stories untold,

With love and devotion, their hands create,

A goddess and family, to celebrate.

    Mahalaya’s dawn, the inaugural hour,

Eyes painted on clay, in creative power,

Awakening Ma Durga, in resplendent bloom,

A seasonal return, a sacred costume.

The river beckons, on the tenth day’s end,

To the Ganga’s embrace, they gently descend,

The clay returns, from whence it came,

In nature’s cycle, it’s all the same.

    A symbol of homecoming, a heart’s delight,

A fusion of faith, in vibrant light,

Durga Puja, a grand spectacle to see,

    Uniting hearts, in harmony.

Religion and art, in a public display,

Collaborative spirit, in a unique array,

    Large-scale installations, urban delight,

Bengali drumming, in the mystical night.

    Class, religion, ethnicities blur,

As the crowds gather, emotions stir,

To admire the goddess, in splendor and might,

Durga Puja, a beacon of unity’s light.

Inscribed in 2021, for all to attest,

A cultural gem, we’re truly blessed,

Durga Puja, a festival grand and free,

In the heart of India, for all to see.

Mahalaya’s Embrace:  Ma Durga’s Divine Descent

In Bengal’s heart, where Ganges gently flows,

Mahalaya’s dawn, a sacred day arose.

Durga Puja, grand festival of the land,

In Ashvin’s month, its glory takes a stand.

Mahalaya’s grace, the starting note it plays,

When Durga descends in a heavenly blaze.

Bengalis rise early, as the sun awakes,

To hymns from Devi Mahatmya, their faith it takes.

    Mahisasuramardini, the tales they hear,

Of Durga’s birth, conquering without fear.

In every home, at puja mandaps they pray,

With offerings to ancestors, they start the day.

For in Hindu lore, a story intertwined,

Goddess Durga’s visit, a belief defined.

    Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwar, in unison,

Created her, a savior, in battles won.

Mahalaya dawns, ‘Devi Paksha’ begins to bloom,

And ‘Pitri Paksha’ ends, dispelling gloom.

A time of mourning, ancestors revered,

On paternal sides, their memories endeared.

This sacred time, a vibrant tapestry,

Where faith and culture blend in harmony.

Devi’s descent brings joy to every heart,

In Durga Puja, they find their sacred art.

The idols rise with intricate detail,

Adorned in splendor, a sight to unveil.

Pandals lit up with radiant delight,

A feast for eyes, a wondrous, joyous sight.

The beats of dhak, the fragrance of the dhunuchi,

Invoke the goddess, a divine cacophony.

    Mouthwatering sweets, and flavorful treats,

Shared among friends in bustling streets.

    Mahalaya’s embrace, a celebration grand,

    Unites Bengalis across the land.

In Durga’s presence, they find their grace,

Mahalaya’s love, in every smiling face.
