In the heart of Chicago, once upon a May,
A tale of struggle and strife found its way.
Workers gathered, voices raised high,
In the shadow of the city’s towering sky.
In the year of ’86, a scene did unfold,
Where the plight of the laborer took hold.
Long hours, low wages, cries of despair,
Filled the air with a fervent prayer.
On that fateful day, the fourth of May,
In Haymarket Square, history would sway.
Amidst the crowd, tension grew,
As workers fought for what was due.
But in the chaos, a sudden spark,
A violence that tore through the dark.
The clash of wills, the clash of might,
In the glow of the city’s electric light.
In the aftermath, the dust did settle,
But the echoes of that day did not dwindle.
For May Day rose, a beacon bright,
A symbol of workers’ relentless fight.
Though years have passed, the spirit remains,
In the veins of those who dare to claim,
Their rights, their dignity, their voice,
In the struggle for a fairer choice.
So let us remember, on this May Day,
The courage of those who paved the way.
In solidarity, hand in hand,
We march forward, a united band.
