Mahalaya’s dawn, a sacred day arose.
Durga Puja, grand festival of the land,
In Ashvin’s month, its glory takes a stand.
Mahalaya’s grace, the starting note it plays,
When Durga descends in a heavenly blaze.
Bengalis rise early, as the sun awakes,
To hymns from Devi Mahatmya, their faith it takes.
Mahisasuramardini, the tales they hear,
Of Durga’s birth, conquering without fear.
In every home, at puja mandaps they pray,
With offerings to ancestors, they start the day.
For in Hindu lore, a story intertwined,
Goddess Durga’s visit, a belief defined.
Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwar, in unison,
Created her, a savior, in battles won.
Mahalaya dawns, ‘Devi Paksha’ begins to bloom,
And ‘Pitri Paksha’ ends, dispelling gloom.
A time of mourning, ancestors revered,
On paternal sides, their memories endeared.
This sacred time, a vibrant tapestry,
Where faith and culture blend in harmony.
Devi’s descent brings joy to every heart,
In Durga Puja, they find their sacred art.
The idols rise with intricate detail,
Adorned in splendor, a sight to unveil.
Pandals lit up with radiant delight,
A feast for eyes, a wondrous, joyous sight.
The beats of dhak, the fragrance of the dhunuchi,
Invoke the goddess, a divine cacophony.
Mouthwatering sweets, and flavorful treats,
Shared among friends in bustling streets.
Mahalaya’s embrace, a celebration grand,
Unites Bengalis across the land.
In Durga’s presence, they find their grace,
Mahalaya’s love, in every smiling face.

Meenakumari – The Star’s Journey

In the realm of cinema, a star did shine,
Famous actress, Meenakumari, so divine.
Born in ’47, in Pakistan’s embrace,
Before the screen, she’d find her place.
She began her journey as a child so young,
With roles in movies, her talent sprung.
But at the age of twenty-one,
She took on a new name, a new role begun.
Her real name was Mehzabin Banu,
Born in ’47, in Mumbai’s view.
Her mother Sukhonthi, a dancer so bright,
Taught her harmonium and music, just right.
Ikbal Banu, her mother’s name,
Was a harmonium player, a musician of fame.
Ikbal Banu’s first child was a daughter,
Meenakumari was her second daughter.
Ali Bux, her father, with loving grace,
Sent her to an ashram, a sacred place.
When he returned to take her home,
His daughter wept, her heart overthrown.
Upon hearing her daughter’s cry,
Ali Bux held her, tears in his eye.
In his arms, he took her away,
To shield her from a life astray.
Her tears moved her father’s soul,
And she became Meenakumari, her new role.
In her second daughter, everyone could see,
The birth of a star, a destiny set free.
Meenakumari’s grand mother, Hemasundari, too,
Freed from a child marriage, anew.
She embraced Christianity, found her way,
And from Bengal, to Meerat she’d sway.
In Meerat, she’d wed, a new chapter found,
To Pyari Lal, in love, she’d be bound.
A storyteller and journalist, known far and wide,
She carried her family’s legacy with pride.
Hemasundari was the daughter of the Rabindranath’s brother.
So, Meenakumari was Rabindranath Tagore’s great grand daughter.

তার আগে সাহেব বিবি অউর গুলাম,
পরিনীতা ও বৈজুবাওরা ছবিতে অভিনয় করেন।
নায়িকা হয়ে প্রথম সিনেমা উনিশশো উনপঞ্চাশে
বীরঘাতক ছবিতে অভিনয় করেন।
তবে ছʼবছর বয়েসে উনিশশো উনচল্লিশে
বেবী মীনা নামে অভিনয় শুরু করেন।
তার আসল নাম মেহজবীন বানু
জন্ম হয় উনিশশো তেত্রিশে মুম্বইতে।
মায়ের নাম ইকবাল বানু
যার আগের নাম ছিল প্রভাবতী বিয়ের আগে।
মা সুকন্ঠী ও নৃত্য-পটিয়সি ছিলেন
তিনি ধর্মান্তরিত হয়ে নিকা করেন,
হারমোনিয়াম বাদক ও সংগীত শিক্ষক
মুম্বাইয়ের আলি বক্সের সাথে।
ইকবাল বানুর প্রথম একটি
কন্যা সন্তান হয়।
তারপর দ্বিতীয় সন্তানও
আরেক কন্যা হয়।
আলি বক্স দ্বিতীয় সন্তানটিকে
একটি আশ্রমের বারান্দায় রেখে,
যখন ফিরে যাচ্ছেন
কন্যাটি হঠাৎ কেঁদে ওঠে।
মেয়ের কান্না শুনে তিনি
মেয়েকে তুলে নেন কোলে।
তার সেই দ্বিতীয় মেয়েকেই চেনে সবাই
মেহজবীন বানু বা মীনাকুমারী বলে।
মীনাকুমারীর দিদিমা হেমসুন্দরী
বাল্যবিবাহের হাত থেকে মুক্তি পেতে,
খ্রীষ্টধর্ম গ্রহণ করেন আর
চলে আসেন বাংলা থেকে মীরাটে।
হেমসুন্দরী মীরাটে এসে
বিয়ে করেন পেয়ারীলালকে,
যাকে ওখানে সবাই
গল্পকার ও সাংবাদিক হিসেবে চেনে।
ঐ হেমসুন্দরী ঠাকুর পরিবারের,
রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের ভ্রাতুষ্পুত্রী।
তাই মীনাকুমারী আসলে
রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের প্রপৌত্রী।
