Kali Puja also known as Shyama Puja is a festival originating from the Indian subcontinent, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. It is celebrated on the new moon day or Amavasya The festival is especially popular in the region of West Bengal, and other places like Mithila and many places of Bihar Odisha, Assam, and Tripura, as well as the town of Titwala in Maharashtra, along with the neighbouring country of Bangladesh.
The festival of Kali Puja is not an ancient one. Kali Puja was practically unknown before the 16th century; famous sage Krishnananda first initiated Kali Puja. In Bengal during the 18th century, King Krishnachandra of Nabadwip also made this puja wide spread. Kali Puja gained popularity in the 19th century, when kali saint Shri Ramkrishna became popular among the Bengalis ; Along with Durga Puja, Kali Puja is the biggest festival in Tamluk, Barasat, Naihati, Barrackpore, Dhupguri, Dinhata, Tapshitala. It is also famous in Bhagalpur of Bihar.

During Kali Puja like Durga Puja worshippers honour the goddess Kali in their homes as well as in pandals, She is worshipped at night with tantric rites and mantras. She is prescribed offerings of red hibiscus flowers, sweets, rice and lentils. It is prescribed that a worshipper should meditate throughout the night until dawn. She is offered food and sweets made of rice, lentils, and fruits. However, in Tantric tradition, animals are ritually sacrificed on Kali Puja day and offered to the goddess. A celebration of Kali Puja in Kolkata is held in Barasat, Barrackpore, Naihati and Madhyamgram region of North 24 Parganas, In North Bengal, Dhupguri, Dinhata, Coochbehar is well known for their majestic pandals, lightings and Idols. Durga Puja of Kolkata is often said synonymously with Kali Puja of Barasat. The region experiences Lacs of footfalls during the days of the festival. People from different regions gather to witness the majestic Pandals.
Two famous Bengali Kali devotees named Ramakrishna and Bamakhepa are famous for Maa Kali Puja.
People visit these pandals throughout the night. Kali Puja is also the time for magic shows, theater, and fireworks
In the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Kali is worshipped as Lakshmi on this day.
Another famous temple dedicated to Kali in Kolkata is Dakshineswar Kali Temple, where Sri Rāmakrishna performed rites. Khepa kali tala (Khepi Maa) in Katwa is renowned.

Although the widely popular annual Kali Puja celebration, also known as the Dipanwita Kali Puja. It is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Kartika, Kali is also worshipped in other new moon days too. Three other major Kali Puja observations are Ratanti Kali Puja, Phalaharini Kali Puja and Kaushiki amavasya Kali Puja. Kaushiki amavasya Kali Puja is greatly associated with Goddess Tara of Tarapith as it is considered the day when Devi Tara appeared on earth and blessed sadhak Bamakhepa ,
According to the legends on this day the Doors of both the “Naraka” and the “swarga” are kept open for some time, while Ratanti puja is celebrated on Magha Krishna Chaturdashi and Phalaharini puja is celebrated on Jyeshta Amavashya of Bengali calendar.
The Phalaharini Kali Puja is especially important in the life of the saint Ramakrishna and his wife Sarada Devi, since on this day in 1872, Ramakrishna worshipped Sarada Devi as the goddess Kali.

একটু পরে নিজেকে সামলে জমিদারবাবু বললেন,
ʼতুমি আজকে থেকেই এখানে আসতে পারʼ।
ʼআমার অন্দরমহলে একটা কাজ আছেʼ
ʼসেটা তুমি চাইলে করতে পারʼ।
ʼকাজটা একটু ঝামেলারʼ
ʼআমার ফাই-ফরমাস খাটতে হবেʼ।
ʼতোমার এখানে থাকা খাওয়ার ব্যবস্থা হবেʼ,
ʼআর মাসে তিন হাজার টাকা মাইনে পাবেʼ।
ভক্ত তো এক কথায় রাজী
বললো, ʼআমি কৃপাকে বলে আসছিʼ।
ʼএকটু পরেই আমি গোপালজীকে ʼ
ʼসঙ্গে নিয়ে এখানে চলে আসছিʼ।
একটু পরেই ভক্ত জমিদার বাড়ীতে
এসে হাজির হলো।
একটা বিরাট ঘরে
তার থাকার ব্যবস্থা হলো।
এত বড় ঘর সে দেখেনি আগে
মনে মনে গোপালজীকে বারবার ধন্যবাদ দিল।
ভাবলো গোপাজীর কৃপায়
জমিদার বাড়ীতে তার ঠাঁই হলো।
ছোট্ট একটা টেবিল যোগার করে
সে গোপালজীর আসন পাতলো সেখানে।
গোপালজীর খাট তো সে নিয়ে আসেনি বাড়ী থেকে
তাই টাকা পেলে সে গোপালজীর একটা খাট আনবে কিনে।
ভক্ত মন দিয়ে কাজ করে,
আর গোপালজীর সেবা করে দু বেলা।
জমিদারবাবুও খুব খুশি তার কাজে
সে একটুও করে না কোনও কাজে অবহেলা।
মাঝে মাঝে কৃপা আসে
তার সঙ্গে দেখা করতে।
সেও গেছিল কৃপার জন্মদিনে
ছুটি নিয়ে কৃপার বাড়ীতে।
সে কৃপার কাছে গল্প শুনেছে
জমিদার বাড়ীতে দূর্গা পুজো হয় মহা ধুমধাম করে।
তখন একটা মজার ব্যাপার হয়।
দশমীর দিন জমিদারবাবু প্রজাদের সঙ্গে বসে খান পুজোর পরে।
এক প্রকান্ড মাঠে আসন পেতে বসে
মা দূর্গার ভোগ সবাই একসঙ্গে খায়।
তবে এটা শুধু এ গ্রামের প্রজারা ও তাদের বাড়ীর লোক
এই ভোগ খাবার নিমন্ত্রণ পায়।
প্রসাদ প্রতিজনে একবার করেই পায়।
আর সেটা মাঠের বাইরে নিয়ে যাওযা মানা।
তাই বাইরের কেউ
এ প্রসাদ খেতে পায় না।
কিছুদিন বাদে, দূর্গা পুজোর দিন চলে আসে।
মহাসমারোহে জমিদার বাড়ীতে দূর্গা পুজো শুরু হয়।
ভক্তের এসময়ে কাজের আর শেষ নেই
সে মন দিয়ে সব কাজ করে যায়।
ভক্ত সামনে থেকে দূর্গা পুজো দেখেনি আগে
তাই তার খুব ভাল লাগে পুজোর সব কাজ।
সপ্তমী, অষ্টমী আর নবমী কেটে যায় ভালোলাগার ঘোরে
মায়ের দশমী পুজো আজ।
মায়ের ঘট বিসর্জন হয়ে গেছে
সকলেরই মন খারাপ আজ।
আবার মা আসবেন আবার এক বছর পরে
বিকেলে প্রতিমা নিরন্জনে ভক্তের অনেক কাজ।
দুপরে সেই বহু প্রতিক্ষিত
মাঠে বসে প্রসাদ খাওয়ার সময় এসে গেছে।
ভক্ত সব কাজ সেরে
অনেকের সাথে মাঠের দিকে যাচ্ছে।
হঠাৎ এক বুড়ো ভিখিরি
রাস্তায় তার জামা ধরে ডাকলো।
সে সবাইকে এগিয়ে যেতে বলে
ভিখিরির কাছে এগিয়ে গেল।
ʼআমাকে একটু প্রসাদ দেবে গোʼ
ʼজানি প্রসাদ দেওযা বাইরে মানাʼ।
ʼতুমি তো জমিদারবাবুর খাস লোকʼ
ʼতাই তুমি এটা পারবে, এটা আমার জানাʼ।
ʼআচ্ছা আমি দেখছিʼ,
ʼতুমি এখানেই বসোʼ।
ʼআমি তোমার জন্যেʼ
ʼএখানেই প্রসাদ আনবʼ।
কিন্তু ভেতরে সে একটার বেশী
প্রসাদ পেল না।
তাই নিজের প্রসাদটাই
ভিখিরিকে দিয়ে ঘরে চলে গেল।
সে না খেয়েই
বিছানায় শুয়ে শুয়ে ভারছে।
জমিদারবাবুর কথা অমান্য করে
সে বাইরের মানুষকে খাইয়েছে।
হয়ত তার চাকরিটাই চলে যাবে
এই অমান্য করা কাজে।
ক্লান্ত শরীরে কখন
চোখটা বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে।
ঘুম ভেঙ্গে দেখে
জমিদারবাবু তাকে ড়াকছে।
জমিদারবাবু তার হাতে
প্রসাদের থালা দিয়ে বললো,
আমি সব শুনেছি
তোমার কান্ড কারখানা।
তুমি আমার চোখ খুলে দিয়েছ
পরেরবার থেকে সবাই প্রসাদ পাবে।
যে আসবে, সেই মাঠে বসে
আমার সঙ্গে খাবে।
ভক্ত সব কথা শুনে
খুশিতে তার চোখে জল এসে গেল।
জমিদারবাবু খুশি হয়ে
আরও দায়িত্বপূর্ণ কাজ ভক্তকে দিল।

Durga Pujo
একটি ছোট্ট ছেলে
এসেছে মামার বাড়ীতে।
স্কুলের ছুটি এখন
তাই মেতেছে মজাতে।
পুজো দালানে
তখন তৈরী হচ্ছে দূর্গা ঠাকুর।
খড় দিয়ে কাঠামো বাঁধা দেখে সে ভাবে
কি ভাবে করবে ওরা সুন্দর ঠাকুর?
এরপর দেখে
কালো মাটি লেপচে খড়ের ওপরে।
তারপর সাদা রঙ
আরও নানান রঙ দেয় তারপরে।
ক্রমে মাতৃপ্রতিমা দেখতে পায়
সেই খড়ের মূর্তিতে।
মনটা আনন্দে ভরে ওঠে
দূর্গা মূর্তি নির্মান দেখে।
এবারে আসে সেই
বহু প্রতীক্ষিত দূর্গা পুজোর দিন।
পুকুর থেকে ঘট আনা,
কলা বৌ প্রতিষ্ঠা, আরও কত কিছু।
ছেলেটি সব কাজেই সামিল হয়,
জিজ্ঞাসু চোখ নিয়ে দেখে সব কিছু।
সময় পেলেই সে নানান প্রশ্ন করে
পুরোহিত মামাকে।
পুজোর নানান কাজগুলোর ব্যাখ্যায়
ঘাড় নাড়াতে থাকে।
ছেলেটির পাঁঠা বলি দেখে
মনটা খারাপ হয়ে যায়।
ছোট্ট একটা ছাগল ছানাকে
সত্যিই কি মারার দরকার ছিল?
ওই ভাবে ওকে বেঁধে
গলাটা কেটে ফেললো?
যদিও গলাটা কাটার সময়
ও চোখটা বন্ধ করে ফেলেছিল।
মা দূর্গাকে সে মনে মনে প্রশ্ন করে,
তুমি কেন এটা করতে দিলে।
ওরা সবাই মিলে
ছাগল ছানাকে মেরে ফেললে।
সপ্তমীর পুজো শেষ হয়
আসে অষ্টমীর দিন।
সবার সাথে পুরোহিত মামার মন্ত্র শুনে
মাকে অঞ্জলি দেয়।
তারপর সন্ধিপুজো
একশো আটটা প্রদীপ জ্বালিয়ে পুজো হয়।
সে এক দারুন দৃশ্য-
মা যেন জেগে উঠেছেন, এই মনে হয়।
নবমী পুজোর পরে আসে
পুজোর শেষ দিন দশমী।
মা চলে যাবে এই চিন্তায়
ছেলেটির মনটা দুঃখে ভারী হয়ে ওঠে।
দশমী পুজো শেষ হলে
তিনটি বেল পাতায়,
সবাই লেখে-
শ্রীশ্রী দূর্গা মাতা সহায়।
পরে ওই বেল পাতাগুলো
মায়ের পায়ে দেয়।
এবার বিসর্জনের ঢাক বাজে-
ঠাকুর থাকবে কতক্ষণ, ঠাকুর যাবে বিসর্জন।
ছেলেটির মনে হয়, এত সুন্দর মূর্তি
কেন হবে বিসর্জন?
অনেকগুলো বাঁশকে পাশাপাশি রেখে
মায়ের প্রতিমা তার ওপরে বাঁধা হয়।
অনেকগুলো লোক সেই বাঁশ তুলে
কাঁধে করে প্রতিমা নিয়ে যায়।
ওই লোকগুলোর মধ্যে একজন
লক্ষ্মী মামা পাশের পাড়ার।
ছেলেটির বায়না লক্ষ্মী মামার কাছে-
মায়ের মুকুটের চূড়ার ডাকের-সাজ চাই তার।
কথা মতো ডাকের সাজ
পেয়ে তার খুব আনন্দ।
কিন্তু মনের মধ্যে ঘুরছে- ʼবাড়ী ফিরতে হবেʼ,
এই চিন্তায় সে নিরানন্দ।
